Contributors to the Emerging Investigators

چکیده
This is the first time that Lab on a Chip has put together an issue that features the younger members of the community that are potential rising stars. We often hear the opinions of supervisors and leaders in the field, but rarely do we hear the voices of students, post-docs or young researchers. Therefore we decided to elicit the opinions of these emerging investigators on issues of current concern, such as the killer application, bottlenecks and issues as well as the future for this field. Their responses to the questions listed below are included at the end of each biography and we hope they give an idea of what problems young researchers face and their outlook and aspirations. (1) What is your view of the ‘‘killer application’’? (2) What are the main difficulties you face working in this area of research? (3) What do you think the future holds for this field and these technologies?

A genre Analysis of the Scholarly Electronic Mail: Implications for Pedagogy
Scholarly mails apparently display stable conventional principles as an emerging genre. Thus, contributors should structure their electronic mails appropriately when writing for purposes of discussing professional topics. However, this requirement plunges many a scholar in dilemma as to how to go about this vital undertaking without written structural norms in electronic mail communication. Thi...
متن کاملRealising the potential of patient and public involvement to make a difference: what can trial teams do?
Results We interviewed 21 chief investigators, 10 trial managers and 17 PPI contributors from 28 trials. Over half the informants indicted that PPI had made a difference, influencing either an aspect of a trial, or how trialists felt about a trial. Informants described how PPI’s impact depended on the quality of chief investigators’ goals and plans for PPI, the quality of relationships between ...

In recent years the science of tissue engineering has emerged as a powerful tool for the development of a novel set of tissue replacement parts and technologies. Recent advances in the fields of biomaterials, stem cell technologies, growth factor field and biomimetics have created a unique set of opportunities for investigators to fabricate lab-grown tissues from combination of extracellular ma...
متن کاملWhat Difference Does Patient and Public Involvement Make and What Are Its Pathways to Impact? Qualitative Study of Patients and Researchers from a Cohort of Randomised Clinical Trials
BACKGROUND Patient and public involvement (PPI) is advocated in clinical trials yet evidence on how to optimise its impact is limited. We explored researchers' and PPI contributors' accounts of the impact of PPI within trials and factors likely to influence its impact. METHODS Semi-structured qualitative interviews with researchers and PPI contributors accessed through a cohort of randomised ...
متن کاملResolution of mixed human DNA samples using mitochondrial DNA sequence variants.
Forensic casework samples routinely contain DNA from multiple contributors [1], posing a challenge to investigators attempting to resolve the components of complex DNA mixtures. Analysis of human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is commonly used in forensic investigations to match evidentiary samples to potential suspects [2,3]. Unique DNA sequences from the hypervariable sequence (HVS) region of the ...
